The Morrison Government will provide a $505,000 capital grant for a new medical centre in Katanning to provide quality health care to people in the Great Southern.

Minister for Health Greg Hunt announced the funding to convert a recently vacated shire office building in the centre of town into a new community medical centre.

“The new centre will offer consulting rooms and allied facilities to provide facilities for GP’s, visiting specialists and allied health professionals.

“The building will include six consulting rooms, waiting and reception areas, ablution facilities, staff amenities and an archiving and storage area,” Minister Hunt said.

“This investment by the Liberal National Government will ensure there is a modern space to cater for the needs of doctors and allied health professionals and demonstrates our commitment to improving health services throughout regional Australia.”

Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson welcomed the investment, which will help attract health professionals to the region.

“My home town of Katanning has a critical shortage of doctors and desperately needs a new medical centre to attract and retain more medical professionals,” he said.

“Katanning families need to have access to whole-of-life medical services, and our seniors should be able to access the care they need close to home, in the communities they have lived in all their lives.

“People in regional areas should expect the same level of quality health care that is available in the city.

“Access to top-quality medical care helps keep towns like Katanning viable and vibrant places to live, so I’m thrilled to have helped deliver such a valuable asset for my home town.”

It is envisaged the project will commence late 2019, with completion anticipated to be mid-2020.
