A new Charter of Aged Care Rights will take effect from 1 July 2019.
The Charter will cover you if you receive any Australian Government-funded aged care service, including:
- residential care in aged care (nursing) homes
- home care packages
- flexible care
- Commonwealth Home Support Program services
- National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flexible Aged Care Program services
The Charter will provide the same rights, no matter the type of care you receive.
Why are we doing this?
The new Charter will replace the 4 separate charters we have now — 1 for residential care, 1 for home care, and 2 for short-term restorative care.
It can be confusing for some people to know which charter applies to them.
There are also differences across the 4 charters. This raises the question of why some people’s rights are different to others.
Having a single charter makes aged care rights clearer for everyone.
