Vaccination is the best way for pregnant women to protect themselves and their babies from whooping cough and influenza.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has provided advice for immunisation providers regarding vaccination for pregnant women.

The ATAGI advice indicates:

  • From 1 July 2018, pertussis containing vaccines will be available through the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for women in each pregnancy.
  • A seasonal influenza vaccine for pregnant women in each pregnancy will continue to be made available through the NIP.
  • Vaccination of pregnant women provides protection to the mother as well as the newborn baby.
  • Immunisation providers should encourage pregnant women to receive pertussis and influenza vaccines. Women are more likely to be vaccinated if their health care provider specifically recommends it.
