My name’s Lucinda, and I’m a graduate at the Australian Government Department of Health. I have a Bachelor of Biomedical Science from Monash University and a Master of Human Nutrition from Deakin University.
Through my studies I developed a real interest in disease prevention, so for me when I graduated I knew that the Department of Health was a perfect fit.
I would describe myself as ambitious. I want the work I do now to set me up to succeed in the future. I think that’s why I found being at Health so valuable. There are opportunities to develop a range of skills, not just those in your direct area of expertise. Because of this, I know I have the best opportunities to expand my skillset and to further my career.
It’s also important to me that my work directly relates to the health and wellbeing of all Australians. At the moment I’m in an area which influences food and nutrition policy across the country. We’re tackling the challenge presented by high rates of overweight and obese Australians. It’s great to know my work helps people be happier and healthier.
Other benefits of the grad program? Going into the workforce for the first time can be challenging, but in the grad program you have a lot of support. For me, that made the transition into the workplace much easier. There’s also a real social aspect to the grad program.
I made the move to Canberra for work, but there are some things from my home town of Melbourne that I miss. The Canberra lifestyle has its own benefits. There are great cafes, restaurants, and the city is easy to get around and live in.
The Australian Government Department of Health’s graduate program offers all graduates access to a great lifestyle, career acceleration and the chance to make a real difference to the lives of everyday Australians.
My advice, apply now.
